ABSU demands immediate arrest and punishment of accused forest officials

The All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU), Kokrajhar district committee on Wednesday urged the police district administration to arrest the two absconding forest officials who were involved in killing Hemanta Narzary of village Gianipur, Jharbari on September 17 when he along with 17 others were ferrying timber logs.

KOKRAJHAR: The All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU), Kokrajhar district committee on Wednesday urged the police district administration to arrest the two absconding forest officials who were involved in killing Hemanta Narzary of village Gianipur, Jharbari on September 17 when he along with 17 others were ferrying timber logs.

At a press meet held at Kokrajhar Press Club, the president of ABSU Kokrajhar district committee, Kripesh Daimary said the killing of Hemanta Narzary was due to money dispute between timber smugglers and forest officials. He said they had collected ground reports on the incident and came to know that the forest officials used to collect money from smugglers and allow them to pass with illegal timber.

Daimary said Hemanta Narzary was caught by Tarun Narzary of Gianipur and Khagen Basumatary of Runikhata, Chirang and they shot him from point-blank range with a service rifle after a brief altercation over money. He demanded that the two absconding forest officials who shot dead Hemanta must be arrested immediately and punished. He also demanded that action must be taken against the Ranger of Jharbari Forest Range office, Vivekananda Pathak, who was arrested on September 18.

Meanwhile, sources from the DFO, Haltugaon Division said the two accused forest officials- Tarun Narzary and Khagen Basumatary were still absconding.
