Administration takes strict action against drug rehabilitation centres

LAKHIMPUR: Some private drug rehabilitation centres, working in various places for the rehabilitation of drug addicts without proper government registration, have become a grave concern.

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, has implemented National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) with the objective of creating awareness and educating people about the ill-effects of substance abuse and for providing a whole range of community-based services for identification, motivation, counselling, de-addiction, after-care, treatment and rehabilitation of individuals with substance dependence, training and capacity building of the service providers through collaborative efforts of the Central and State Governments and Non- Governmental Organizations.

In pursuance of the NAPDDR, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India and for ensuring right protocols for drug de-addiction rehabilitation centres, as discussed in the State Level Coordination Agency (SLCA) on Drugs Prevention, Assam, proper registration of the rehabilitation centres is required for taking various rehabilitation measures for de-addiction treatment and practices in Assam for drug users. Despite such conditions, a number of private drug rehabilitation centres have been working without proper registration by violating the norm.

However, such private drug rehabilitation centres, working in Lakhimpur without government registration, have come to the notice of the district administration of late and the district administration has taken strict steps against them. As a part of such steps, Lakhimpur district administration has initially called upon them to register themselves at the earliest.

In this connection, District Magistrate-cum-Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur, Sumit Sattawan has issued a conditional order, vide No. E-5015/DFA/27334, under Section 133 CrPC. Through the order, the District Magistrate has directed the Drug Rehabilitation Centers working in Lakhimpur district without government registration to register themselves mandatorily under the Office of the District Social Welfare Officer, Lakhimpur within 15 days. Otherwise, the Lakhimpur district administration will initiate strict action against them.
