BISWANATH CHARIALI: Poet and artist of Jamugurihat from Sonitpur district of Assam, Arup Saikia recently constructed an innovative house with features borrowed from the medieval European architecture wedded to the traditional Assamese touch of bamboo and wood.
Though the top floor is designed in the typical 'Assam-type' house style with slanting roof, Saikia's house has three floors.
Christened ''Hemapadma Aloy' (which means a house in the memory of parents), the obejective behind the movew to design this aesthetically attractive architecture is make the new generation of the society aware about our traditional environment-friendly and scientifically designed dwellings of wood and bamboo.
Arup Saikia is reputed for performing 'Bhaona' in the English language both within the country and abroad.
Talking to The Sentinel, Arup Saikia said, "Our State has abundance of bamboo and wood. We should utilize these local resources to highlight our rich architectural culture. The stairway to the first floor is made of bamboo and the one to the second floor is a vertically-sawn tree trunk.
Saikia added, "I ardently look forward to the day when this innovative architecture will inspire our new generation to preserve the traditional Assamese architecture with a modern look.
