Agitation will continue until Citizenship Amendment Act is scrapped: AASU

Lakhimpur: “We will continue our non-violent agitation against Citizenship Amendment Act. This agitation will continue until and unless the controversial Act is scrapped. The State government cannot prevent us from continuing our democratic movements by exerting its dominating forces,” stated Lakhimpur unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) general secretary Dhanmoni Dutta in Lakhimpur on Monday.

The district AASU leader said so while taking part in the Gana Satyagraha programme staged by Harmoti unit of the organisation demanding scrapping of the Act. Notably, the regional unit of the organization initiated the agitation programme synchronizing with the statewide protest declared by the central committee. As a part of the programme, the organization organized a mass convention at the Harmoti Swahid Bedi premises.

Taking part in the programme, AASU central committee finance secretary Krishna Das, Lakhimpur district unit general secretary Dhanmoni Dutta, adviser Sanjib Konwar and many other prominent personalities became vocal against the government in the Centre and the State for passing the Act violating the Assam Accord. They strongly reiterated the demand to scrap the Act.

The organization took out a protest rally covering the Harmoti center with the participation of over thousands of people. On the other hand, the Laluk regional unit of AASU also demonstrated the Gana Satyagraha programme at the Swahid Bedi premises at Laluk Tiniali. The people of the area spontaneously took part in the programme demanding the scrapping of the Act.

Similarly, the Kadam regional unit also staged Gana Satyagraha demanding scrapping of the Act. On the other hand, North Lakhimpur regional unit of the organization burnt the effigies of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal protesting against the arrest of AASU adviser Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya, general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi along with the other protesters of the Gana Satyagraha.

On the other hand, all the regional units under Lakhimpur AASU have continued the awareness campaign on Citizenship Amendment Act in the village areas organizing Pada Yatra, street meetings, public meetings. It is observed that the people of the areas concerned have thronged in these protests programmes spontaneously.
