GOLAGHAT/JORHAT: AGP president Atul Bora said that in its roller-coaster journey since 1985, the AGP has been playing an important role in state politics. He said that the AGP is a regional party with a national outlook.

Speaking at the open session of the 39th foundation day of the party at Golaghat today, Bora said that the party played an important role in state politics. “The party has experienced various ups and downs in its 38-year history since its inception in 1985,” he said.

On other regional parties criticizing the AGP for allying with a national party, the BJP, Bora said, “The upcoming regional parties criticize us for allying with the BJP, but they themselves are allies of another national party, the Congress, which is responsible for the martyrs of 855 in the state during the six-year Assam Agitation. These so-called regional parties have lost their identity as regional parties. The AGP has always been a regional party with national aspirations, as it supported Atal B. Vajpayee and HD Deve Gowda’s (Janata Dal). Dinesh Goswami was the Union Law Minister, and Birendra Prasad Baishya was the Union Minister of Steel and Mines during the IK Gujral’s Janata Dal Government at the Centre”.

AGP’s working president and state Health Minister Keshab Mahanta said that the AGP was working in close cooperation with the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government in the state and would continue to do so.

The party felicitated former Education Minister Thaneswar Bodo and founder AGP member Dwijen Phukan on the occasion.

A huge crowd of about 10,000 attended the foundation day celebration of the party at Golaghat.
