DOOMDOOMA: Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), Doomdooma Anchalik Committee organized a citizens' meet at Doomdooma Sakha Xahitya Xabha Bhavan on Saturday to discuss various problems of the region. The meeting adopted a resolution to press the government to fulfill the long-standing demand of declaring Doomdooma as subdivision.

The meeting, which was presided over by president Prabhakar Sarmah, was attended by various district-level office bearers, including its district president Surajit Moran and representatives of various ethnic and social organizations. In the beginning, general secretary Kalyan Jyoti Moran, while explaining the objectives of the meeting, said that the prime objectives of the citizens' meet was to raise the problems of the region, besides AJYCP's main demands since its inception like granting full autonomy, dual citizenship and provision of Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the State of Assam.

Thereafter, citizens from various walks of life and representatives of different ethnic and socio-cultural and educational institutions took part in the discussion. They were unanimous in demanding sub-divisional status for Doomdooma. While places having smaller area and population in comparison with Doomdooma have been upgraded to subdivision and district-level status, it was unfair on the part of the government to deprive the place inhabited predominantly by the tea tribes and people belonging to other backward classes. The other demands included solving erosion problem caused by Anantanala, provincialization of Science stream of Doomdooma College and Doomdooma Junior College as well as provincialization of other non-provincialized schools of the neighbouring area.

The citizens' meet also demanded piped gas supply to the households of Doomdooma and adjoining areas and completion of water supply project of the town. It was further resolved that a memorandum prepared on behalf of the citizens' meet would be submitted to the Chief Minister and departments concerned, besides submitting to the MLAs of five constituencies of Tinsukia district – Doomdooma (MLA Durga Bhumij), Sadiya (MLA Bolin Chetia), Digboi (MLA Suren Phukan), Tinsukia (MLA Sanjay Keshan) and Margherita (MLA Bhaskar Sharma) - and MP Pradhan Baruah of Lakhimpur Parliamentary Constituency.
