Naharkatia: Members of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad's (AJYCP) Dibrugarh Jila Samiti on Friday held a protest rally in Dibrugarh district of Assam, demanding repeal of the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). Over 500 members of the powerful students' organisation along with Adivasi Chatra Sanstha (ACS), Naharkatia Anchalik Chatra Sanstha (NACS) and Nikhil Bharat Ganatantrik Mahila Samiti came together and took to the streets in Naharkatia to protest against the Act and demand its repeal at the earliest.

Speaking to the media, Girin Chetia, president of AJYCP Dibrugarh district committee, said, "Our five youths were martyred during the Anti-CAA protests in 2019. We have been protesting continuously since then. Even though we had to halt our protest in Assam due to the novel coronavirus outbreak in March, we are now back again and we will keep this protest on until and unless the government repeals the Citizenship (Amendment) Act."

The protesters further stated that they are also holding this protest in memory of those youths who lost their lives in 2019 during the anti-CAA protests.

Earlier on December 9, the North East Students' Organisation (NESO) had announced in a statement that it would observe 'Black Day' on December 11 displaying black flags and black banners at important locations across the Northeast states, as on this day in 2019, the Parliament had passed the draconian Act. The goal of observing 'Black Day' is to give a message to the Government of India that they are against CAA and to remind the people of another political injustice that it has perpetrated on the indigenous people of the Northeast, the students' organisation had said.

The anti-CAA protests are still on in different parts of Assam amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
