LAKHIMPUR: The activists of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) took to the streets in Lakhimpur to protest against the hike in the power tariff.
Regarding the issue, the members of the North Lakhimpur regional unit of the organization, led by president Manas Pratim Saikia and general secretary Bimala Prashad Das, burnt the effigy of State Power Minister Nandita Garlosa in front of the Electrical Subdivisional Office, located in North Lakhimpur town.
The president and the secretary of the organization termed the APDCL's move of hiking the power tariff as 'obstinate' and said that the common consumers had to suffer a lot due to frequent hike in the power tariff in the State. The organization strongly opposed the hike in power tariff and demanded the government to roll back the decision. During the demonstration, the protesters rent the air of the area by shouting various slogans slamming the Government of Assam, APDCL and Power Minister Nandita Garlosa.
Notably, the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) has decided to levy a Fuel and Power Purchase Price Adjustment (FPPPA) charge of 50 paisa per unit on all categories of consumers on electricity bills for the months of January, February and March, 2023. According to a notice issued by the APDCL, the levy has been made as per provisions of the Assam Electricity Regulatory Commission (Fuel and Power Purchase Price Adjustment) Regulations, 2010. Prior to it, the APDCL had hiked the power tariff by 30 paisa per unit for the month of November, 2022, which was realized in the bill generated in December, 2022.
