GUWAHATI: Sibsagar MLA and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi has congratulated the Congress for breaking its alliance with the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).
The Congress has joined hands with the AIUDF and a few other political organisations in Assam prior to the last assembly polls with the goal to wrest power from the BJP in the state. However, it failed in achieving the target and the saffron party came to power in Assam for the second consecutive time. The BJP-led Mitrajot won 75 seats out of the 126 seats, while the Congress-led Mahajot won 50 seats.
On Tuesday morning, Gogoi congratulated the Congress party via a Tweet. He said the Congress has taken a good political step by deciding to not be with the AIUDF.
It may be mentioned that the Congress suffered another jolt earlier this month when All India Mahila Congress president and former Silchar MP Sushmita Dev resigned from the Congress and switched to the Trinamool Congress. Dev, daughter of seven-time parliamentarian Santosh Mohan Dev and former Silchar legislator Bithika Dev, had submitted her resignation from the Congress to party chief Sonia Gandhi on August 15. She flew to Kolkata on August 16 and officially joined the TMC in the presence of TMC leaders Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O'Brien. After Sushmita snapped ties from the grand old party, several people, who were associated with the party, left and jumped to the TMC.
Besides, at least two other Congress MLAs –Rupjyoti Kurmi and Sushanta Borgohain left the Congress and joined the saffron brigade after the assembly elections in Assam this year.
