GUWAHATI: MLA Akhil Gogoi demanded an institution of a judicial probe into every police encounter that happened in Assam.

Speaking to media in the assembly premises, the independent MLA claimed that the police even threatened journalists in Sivasagar. Condemning the incident Gogoi said, "I am not in the favour of criminal or crime. I have been always raising my voice against the Sarada, Luis Burger, and the North Cacher Hill scams. The police officers who were involved in fake encounters should be arrested."

He also alleged that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been running the government like a totalitarian ruler.

"How could a single person be a chief minister, judge, or MLA at the same time?" he added. MLA Gogoi also appealed to ULFA(I) leader Paresh Baruah to join the peace process with the government.

Reacting to the plea filed by the National Investigation Agency(NIA) in the Gauhati High Court challenging his bail granted by a lower court earlier, Gogoi alleged that Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma did not want his release. " A political conspiracy has started against me. The NIA has been conspiring to arrest me again.

Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himata Biswa Sarma said that police can take extreme steps against criminals abiding by the law. Replying to a question asked by Congress MLA Sherman Ali in the ongoing Assam assembly session, the Chief Minister insisted that police must take action against the criminals who attack them. Recently, several police encounters happened across the state. Police claimed that they shot the accused when they tried to flee or attack security personnel.

Of late. the Chief Minister Sarma in a meeting with all the Officer-in-Charges(OC)s of the Assam Police asked the police officers to shoot in the knees of the criminals who try to flee. The police encounter incidents have been drawing mixed responses.
