DOOMDOOMA: Like the rest of India, the mid-day meal workers engaged in the Lower Primary (LP), Higher Primary (HP) or the High schools of Assam are playing an important role in providing hygienic food to the students into reality.
The workers, besides cooking and distribution of food to the students, have to shoulder the responsibility of fourth grade employees like chowkidar, peon or scavenger in those institutions where these posts remain unfilled. But pathetically, instead of paying minimum wages to these workers, a meagre honorarium of Rupees fifteen thousand only per month is paid to them by the Government and that, too, not regularly.
The majority of these workers are women (almost 90 %) and are from economically backward classes of the society. It is alleged that these workers are yet to receive their honorarium of nine months upto the month of September this year. As against this only rupees two thousand each have been paid to them.
So, All Assam Mid-day Meal Workers Union, in a press release, declared an agitational programme on September 23 in front of all the educational blocks of the State in support of their demand for releasing their entire outstanding amount before the coming Durga Puja by the Government and to take steps for payment of their honorarium in the first week of each month.
