LAKHIMPUR: The North Lakhimpur regional unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) demanded the Lakhimpur district administration to evict illegal encroachment on the bank of the River Somdiri and Gariajan in North Lakhimpur town.

In this connection, the organization once again submitted a memorandum to Circle Officer (CO) of North Lakhimpur Revenue Circle on Friday. Notably, due to the aggression of suspected citizens and some other dishonest people, the river bed of Somdiri and Gariajan turned narrow day after day, year after year. As a result of it, the two water bodies have lost their original capacity to discharge the rain water from the town causing artificial flood.

Through the same memorandum, the organization further demanded the district administration to increase the number of COVID-19 vaccination centres in the district in order to reduce the heavy rush of the public in present vaccination centres.

The organization further sought the district administration's intervention to reduce the rent of the private hostel up to 50 per cent for the benefit of the economically backward students in view of prevailing COVID-19 situation. Notably, those students, who are studying in various academic institutions of North Lakhimpur town by boarding private hostels, are compelled to pay their rent without staying there at present due to the closure of their institutions. Under such circumstances, the economically backward students have to face pecuniary difficulties with regard to paying their hostel charges of several months, being hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown situation.
