LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) resorted to an agitational programme in order to reiterate its demand for an immediate solution of the sensitive Assam-Arunachal border dispute and repair of the critically deplorable stretch of the National Highway-15 (NH-15).

Notably, the aggressive activities on the part of government of the State of Arunachal Pradesh, refreshing the border dispute again and again, have been harassing the people of Lakhimpur district living in the border areas. On the other hand, the people of the district, along with travellers from other districts and States have to suffer a lot for a long period due to the critically deplorable stretch of the NH-15 from Charaimoriya near North Lakhimpur town to Padumoni Aai Than of Boginadi area under Kadam Revenue Circle. Neither the National Highway Authority of India nor the Union Government nor the Assam State Government has paid attention to repair the same despite consecutive demands as well as protest programmes initiated by various organizations.

In support of the demands, the activists of Lakhimpur AASU blocked the NH-15 at Main Chariali of North Lakhimpur town for half an hour on Saturday. By the demonstration of the same protest programme, Lakhimpur AASU demanded the government to mitigate the perennial flood and erosion problem of the district as well as of the State. Later, representing the district administration, Assistant Commissioner Jintu Sarmah arrived at the blockade spot and requested the protesters to withdraw their demonstration. The organization submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur in support of the demands.
