LAKHIMPUR: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has strongly opposed the unabated felling of invaluable trees by Power Grid Corporation of India, which has been done for the construction of electrical towers to transport electricity from Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP) at Gerukamukh of Dhemaji district.

On Friday, the members of the Gogamukh regional unit of the organization stopped such felling of trees at Chetia Gaon located at Gigamukh-Gerukamukh connecting road. The organization alleged that the felling of trees was done without issuing prior notice. The felling of trees on Friday was allegedly done in the presence of forest officers of Dhemaji Division. The members of the organization slammed the forest officers for the deforestation activities.

"NHPC continues deforestation to construct electrical towers even after destroying forest areas of two hills. In addition, Power Grid has constructed large electrical towers by destroying the vegetation of the villages. We will never tolerate such activities against nature," Gogamukh AASU expressed while issuing threat of resorting to intensified stir against destruction of natural resources.
