KOKRAJHAR: The All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) has made it clear that the student body will support Urkhao Gwra Brahma, former Rajya Sabha MP for No. 5 Kokrajhar (ST) HPC and Pradip Kr. Daimary, ex-MCLA, BTC for No. 8 Mangaldai constituency in the ensuing general election. Both the candidates are currently president and general secretary of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL).
Talking to reporters at Bodofa House, Kokrajhar, the president of the ABSU Promod Boro said the movement group felt the need of a sincere political leader in both the constituencies to maintain the value base of politics, peaceful coexistence, ensure good governance, proper implementation of central and State sponsored projects and optimum development in both the constituencies.
“We want to elect our candidates to eliminate the misunderstanding, trust deficit among the communities and also to work efficiently for permanent solution of the long pending Bodo issue, expedite peace process with ceasefire underground groups like NDFB (P), NDFB and other groups of Assam and North East, to provide security for all sections of people ensures equal right and protection of the identity and culture of Tribal and other ethnic people of BTC and Assam,” he said adding that the Bodo organizations will support UPPL party and it’s already declared candidates in two constituencies for many vital reasons and also request people in general to support both the candidates and elect them with maximum margin of votes.
Boro said the tribal and other ethnic and non ethnic Indian citizens of BTC region and Assam had witnessed so many unrest situations for political mishandling of some vital issues in last couple of years by some immature political representatives elected from both the constituencies.
“As parliament is the highest policy making body of the nation we have the responsibility to elect an efficient candidate who understands the democratic values and have obligation towards constitution and people of this region and country as whole who will also adhere to for the solution of the various problems and issue of the tribal and non tribal people of the State,” he said. He also said there will be no Boro and O boro tag in this year’s general election as people have rejected the communal politics.
Replying questions, the ABSU president said they had decided to field independent candidate in Tezpur but discussion is on to support NCC candidate led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad A Sangma in Guwahati constituency to garner support for the cause of indigenous people.
General Secretary of the NDFB (P) Gobinda Basumatary said they fought for right to self determination over two decades with arms but they have faith in democracy and Constitution of India and has been in dialogue with the Government of India seeking permanent solution of Bodo problems. He said in the last five years, the sitting MP from Kokrajhar Naba Kr. Sarania has totally failed to play significant role in addressing the issues of indigenous people of the region and the State as a whole. He said they were united for the cause of the indigenous people of Assam and will stand together for Kokrajhar and Mangaldai constituencies.
