TANGLA: The All BTC Minorities Students' Union (ABMSU) has registered strong dismay over the arrest of Vadgam MLA and Dalit leader of Gujarat, Jignesh Mevani by Assam Police after BJP Executive Member of Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), Arup Kumar Dey lodged an FIR with Kokrajhar Police alleging that a tweet by the journalist-turned-politician Mevani had received "widespread criticism and has the propensity to disturb public tranquility, prejudicial to maintenance of harmony among a certain section of people".
In a press communiqué on Friday, ABMSU president Ashraful Islam and general secretary Taison Hussain asserted that the arrest of Mevani had revealed the 'autocratic' nature of the ruling dispensation. The students' body alleged that the present authorities were trying to muzzle the voice of dissent and those raising voice against them were being victimized, be it the Dalit or minority leaders.
"Freedom of speech and expression is one of the most sacred fundamental rights enshrined in our Constitution and such vindictive action of the government is not a good sign for a healthy democratic country," the communiqué added. The students' body demanded release of Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani.
