SILCHAR: An all party meeting, held at the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner's office on Sunday, unanimously advocated for setting up the proposed greenfield airport at Dolu TE. However, the interest of the labourers has be ensured by the government at any cost, all the representatives of various political parties as well as a section of leading citizens added.

Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy, who presided over the meeting said, the MoU, signed by the government and the tea estate authority in presence of all the three labour unions, had various clauses ensuring the interest of the labourers of Mainagarh and Lalbagh, the two divisions of Dolu TE. The Airport authority had done the survey and the topography of the proposed site at Dolu was found to be accurate for the proposed airport, he added. Roy said, the handing over of land had already been completed and now the process of acquisition had to be started. But an 'unrecognized' union like Asom Majuri Shramik Union suddenly surfaced to disrupt the setting up of the project. Later speaking to the media, Dr Roy accused that the recent labour unrest was fuelled by a Maoist group. He, however, confidently said, the airport would definitely be set up at Dolu.

The meeting was attended by the representatives of political parties like BJP, Congress, AUDF, CPM, TMC. Two Congress MLAs of the district Misbahul Islam Laskar and Khalil Ahmed Majumdar were also present.

Meanwhile, Karimganj MLA Kamalakha Dey Purkayastha on Sunday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding that the proposed airport should be set up at a place easily accessible to all the three districts of Barak Valley instead of Dolu.
