JORHAT: On Monday, another alleged ragging incident was reported at a college in the Jorhat area of upper Assam.

The event was made public a day after a student from Dibrugarh University committed suicide by jumping over the hostel's two-story structure on campus on Sunday, purportedly as a result of harsh verbal and physical abuse from more seasoned pupils.

A B.Com. student from Jagannath Barooah College named Pranab Chutia claimed that he was subjected to physical and mental abuse, which ultimately caused him to vacate the dorm.

"The senior residents of the college's Sayeed Abdul Malik hostel tortured me. Every afternoon, I used to receive discipline from the older students. They forbade me from sleeping at night. I could not bear that at all. I found it difficult to focus on my schoolwork," he said.

The student went on to say that he had to leave the hostel because there was no relief from the ragging.

Chutia continued, "The issue has gotten worse for me because my parents are finding it difficult to pay my bills right now.

When approached, Utpal Jyoti Mahanta, the college's principal, declined to comment on the matter.

In another similar incident, Anand Sharma, a first-semester M.Com student at Dibrugarh University, allegedly jumped from the hostel's two-story structure in an act of ragging.

He is receiving care in the ICU of a private hospital in Dibrugarh right now.

According to the Dibrugarh SP, the student's parents, Anand Sharma, filed a complaint stating that five people were ragging in a university dorm.

The accused, Niranjan Thakur, was subsequently taken to jail, and the SP continued by saying that three additional people were placed in detention. The injured victim's health is stable, he declared.

At least 18 students were expelled from Dibrugarh University on Monday due to their suspected involvement in this incident, and three students have been arrested by the police.
