DIBRUGARH: The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma updated about a grant of Rs 300 crore for the construction of doctor's quarters and a student's hostel of Assam Medical College. The CM made this announcement during the platinum jubilee celebration of AMCH on Thursday.
The Assam Medical College & Hospital is the first medical college in the northeast region of India. The college was established in the year 1947 on November 3.
The Assam Medical College & Hospital completed its 75th year of establishment. To mark the platinum year of the college, the CM released a commemorative postal stamp along with unveiling a souvenir. Hundreds of present and past alumni of the medical college were present in the event. The ONGC donated nine advanced life support ambulances to the college which were flagged off by CM Sharma on the day of the event. The ONGC contributed the ambulances as a part of their CSR initiative, which amounts to Rs 4.38 crore.
The celebration also saw the CM paying his tribute to Sir John Berry White. The Assam Medical College was a result of his efforts. The CM while addressing the gathering in the college spoke about White, who possessed a great vision in terms of modern medical education. Sarma told the gathering that the college owes its birth to White.
White arrived in Assam in the year 1858, when he was twenty-four-year-old, to work under the East India Company. He offered his service in the Upper Assam region, for a period of 24 years. He eventually got promoted to the position of civil surgeon in the then undivided Lakhimpur district. He retired in the year 1882. The visionary medical practitioner donated his entire live savings, the estimate of which amounts to Rs 50,000 for establishing a medical school in Dibrugarh. The Berry White Medical School was thus established, which later developed into a full-fledged medical college as Assam Medical College in 1947.
White embraced death in the year 1896 on November 19 in London.
