Guwahati: Renowned Assamese singer Archana Mahanta passed away around 11 am in the morning on Wednesday, August 27, in Guwahati's Health City hospital. She was 72.

The acclaimed singer had been undergoing treatment at the private hospital in the city ever since she suffered a brain stroke on July 14 last. A team of doctors had been continuously monitoring her health.

Days after she suffered the stroke, doctors confirmed that her situation was "critical." "She is also suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, and Parkinson's disease. The left side of her body has almost become paralyzed due to the stroke. It has been getting very tough now to say anything about her health condition," a doctor tending to the ailing singer after her stroke said on July 16.

Mahanta's stroke and subsequent "critical" condition led to immense concern in the state over her health.

"Concerned over the news of eminent Assamese singer Archana Mahanta Baideu illness. My prayers for her quick recovery", Assam's Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had tweeted days after the news of her stroke became public. Assam's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Ranjeet Dass had also expressed concern over the ailing singer's health.

Archana Mahanta's son, the renowned singer nicknamed as 'Papon', who was out-of-station when his mother suffered the stroke, thanked the well-wishers of the family through a post on social media.

"Thank you for your prayers for the speedy recovery of my mother. She is a fighter and I am sure with everyone's love and prayers she'll come out of the condition she is in due to a stroke she had! Please keep sending your positive energies!" Papon wrote in a post on social media.
