Anti-CAA protests: Women participate in large numbers at Lakhimpur district

LAKHIMPUR: Taking part in the stir initiated by the Dhemaji district unit of AASU, AJYCP and 30 ethnic organizations, thousands of women rocked the district with massive protest programme opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. The women of the district displayed their protest against the Act by initiating a sit-in in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office and taking out a mega protest rally on Saturday.

The protest meeting organized on this occasion by the Dhemaji regional units of AASU, AJYCP and other organizations was inaugurated by cultural activist Bimala Gogoi Gohain. She called upon the women community to strengthen the anti-CAA stir. She further appealed to women not to yield into the politics prone to communal discrimination. On the other hand, octogenarian Hemlata Borgohain appealed to the women to lead the stir till the last drop of blood. In the same protest meeting, Axam Xahitya Xabha Ramdhenu sub-committee working president Putali Kayastha, Dhemaji AASU president Dipak Sarmah, general secretary Kalyan Gogoi and other leaders also delivered speeches.

The women protesters registered their protest against the Act by reciting poems and singing songs during the sit-in. It was followed by a mega protest rally covering Dhemaji town. During the rally, the protesters shouted slogans to demand the scrapping of the Act at the earliest.
