SILCHAR: Keeping abreast with the rest of the country, remotest districts like Karimganj and Hailakandi too are set to get smart electricity meters for every household. In the initial phase, 30 thousands meters would be installed in four towns of south Assam. Informing this, CEO of APDCL Badarpur cirlcle Chinmay Kumar Sarma Bardoloi said, 30 thousand consumers of Hailakandi, Lala, Karimganj and Badarpur will be provided smart meters absolutely free. Sarma Bordaloi said, under Union government's Uday Yojana, APDCL will install 6.2 lakh meters in Assam. Customers would not be charged any fee for the new meters. Installation would be done by the representatives of Anvil Cables Pvt Ltd which had been approved by the APDCL for the job.

Explaining the advantages of smart meters Sarma Bardaloi said chances of erroneous billing is far less in this system as there is no scope for manual reading of electricity consumption. Further the consumers can stay updated about their consumption through specially designed Smart Bijulee Mobile App.

Recently several cases of cyber forgery were reported where consumers get messages in their mobiles asking them to pay their electricity bill on the odd hour of the same day. Fraudsters then siphon off the money from the bank accounts of the consumers as they click the link provided by the offenders. Sarma Bordaloi clarified that APDCL never sends any SMS or makes calls to their consumers for payment of bill.
