Arms license holders asked to deposit firearms to ensure free and fair election

The District Magistrate-cum-Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur, Khageswar Pegu has declared prohibition regarding the possession of firearms by exercising his power conferred upon him under section 144 Cr.PC in order to ensure free and fair election and to maintain law and order.

LAKHIMPUR: The District Magistrate-cum-Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur, Khageswar Pegu has declared prohibition regarding the possession of firearms by exercising his power conferred upon him under section 144 Cr.PC in order to ensure free and fair election and to maintain law and order.

According to an order issued vide No. LMG 3/2021/15 dated March 2, the DC prohibited the carrying, keeping and possession of firearms until the electioneering works of the Assam Legislative Assembly Election were over. Through the same order, the DC directed arms license holders to deposit their weapons at the police stations of their respective jurisdictions within seven days and to obtain paper receipt against depositing the same. Failure to follow this direction is liable to be prosecuted under Section 188 of Indian Penal Code (IPC). TEZPUR: In view of the ensuing Legislative Assembly Election, Manvendra Pradip Singh, District Magistrate-cum-Deputy Commissioner of Sonitpur issued an order to licensed arms holders to deposit their arms in their nearby police station. The order will come into force with immediate effect and will remain in force until further order.
