ASCW chairperson holds review meeting in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR: Dr Hemoprova Barthakur, chairperson along with Lucky Gogoi, member of the Assam State Commission for Women (ASCW), visited Kokrajhar district and held a review meeting on the rising trends of crime against women with the District Women's Cell, Kokrajhar here in the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner's office on Wednesday.

In the meeting, a power-point presentation was presented by the Kokrajhar District Women's Cell whereby a commitment to eradicate the menace of crime against women and various activities so far undertaken in the district were highlighted. The chairperson was impressed with the activities and strategies being undertaken by the District Women's Cell with regard to crimes and violence against women, but she still insisted to strengthen the cell by involving more social workers and NGOs in the cell and to enhance its activities in rural areas by forming more cells in the subdivision and block level too.

Highlighting the roles of every stakeholder, like government departments, agencies, judiciary, police, social activists, NGOs and others, for ensuring that the victims of violence are provided timely protection, medical aid, besides facilitating their dignified rehabilitation, she asked the members present to perform their duties with commitment and determination. She also emphasized the need for a comprehensive mechanism in order to safeguard the women folk and suggested the district cell to intensify awareness programme in collaboration with the district social welfare department.

Asking to hold meeting of District Women's Cell once in a month, she requested them to be always alert and focused in their work to provide services to the victimized women. The chairperson also heard the problems faced by the members present in performing their duties during the meeting.

Responding affirmatively to the suggestion put forward by the Chairperson of Assam State Commission for Women, Varnali Deka, Deputy Commissioner and chairperson of District Women's Cell, Kokrajhar, assured that they would do the necessary work to strengthen the District Women's Cell so as to enhance their activities within a short period.

Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police, Pratik V. Thube, Additional Deputy Commissioner Pradip Kumar Gupta, Assistant Commissioner and Member Secretary of District Women's Cell Rima Trishna Haloi along with members of the District Women's Cell were present at the meeting.
