GUWAHATI: The Assam State Commission for Women (ASCW) on Thursday organized a one-day seminar on 'Women in Sports' at the Assam Administrative Staff College, Khanapara, Guwahati.
The inaugural programme was attended by Dr Hemaprova Borthakur, Chairperson, ASCW, Mukesh Sahu, Principal Secretary, Women & Child Development Department, Government of Assam, Farouk Alam, Commissioner & Secretary Sports and Youth Welfare, and Nayanmoni Saikia, Arjuna Awardee. Emphasizing the importance of sports,Nayanmoni Saikia requested women to come forward to join sports which can be a very good career option as well. Parents were requested not to discriminate their girl child.
The technical sessions were taken up by Dr Rosie Kalita (SP, CM's Special Vigilance Cell) who spoke about how women can empower themselves through sports and it can also help in self-defence. Karate can be a career option also.
