Assam: AJYCP Protests Against Government’s Decision to Teach Subjects in English

DHEKIAJULI: The Sonitpur district unit of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) on Wednesday staged a three-hour sit-in demonstration in front of AASU martyrs' altar in Dhekiajuli town against the decision of the State Government to teach Mathematics and Science subjects in English medium from Class VI onwards in all Assamese medium schools of Assam.

Under the aegis of Jitu Talukadar, general secretary, and Nripen Chandra Nath, president, Sonitpur district AJYCP started their sit-in at 11 am. The sit-in was supported by Dhekiajuli unit of AASU, All Assam Citizens’ Forum Dhekiajuli unit, Bodo Sahitya Sabha, among others. Tanmoi Borah, the Circle Officer of Dhekiajuli Revenue Circle, arrived on the spot and met the AJYCP leaders. The AJYCP leaders submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma through the Circle Officer, stating their demands, including immediate appointment of headmasters in all primary schools of Assam. In the memorandum the AJYCP said that the government’s move will decrease the relevance of Assamese and other vernacular languages of the State, and requested the government to look into their demands and take action immediately.
