SILCHAR: A huge fire that broke out in a residential area in Karimganj district of Assam completely gutted a total of 10 houses, reducing them to ashes.
The blaze reportedly took place in the Patel Nagar area of South Karimganj in Karimganj district of Barak Valley in Assam on Wednesday night.
Police suspect arson to be the reason behind the massive fire, even though the exact cause that started it is yet to be determined, sources informed.
Fire tenders rushed to the spot when informed of the fire incident and were able to successfully douse the blazing fire before it could spread to nearby houses, thus averting a major disaster.
According to the sources, property and goods worth lakhs of rupees were destroyed in the fire.
In another incident reported earlier yesterday, a massive fire is said to have broken out at Jamuna Road Chariali in Assam’s Sivasagar. The freak incident led to the death of a child, while the mother sustained burn injuries.
The fire started from a leaking gas pipe, after an excavator digging a drain accidently broke the pipe, which resulted in the blaze, said reports. The driver of the excavator is said to have fled the scene, leaving behind the vehicle. This led to the fire spreading rapidly, causing devastation and leading to chaos in the area.
Two nearby houses were burnt down as a result of the fire, leaving a woman and her child with burn injuries. Local residents immediately rushed the victims to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh. By the time they reached AMCH, however, it was too late and the child did not survive the ordeal. The age of the child was not revealed till the filing of this report.
The mother of the deceased child is said to be fighting for her life and is reported to be still in a critical condition, according to doctors.
