GUWAHATI: On March 6, a local court in Assam's Jorhat district sentenced 11 individuals to life in jail for lynching a 23-year-old man in May 2020 while the country was under COVID-19-induced lockdown.

Seven other defendants were exonerated by the court for lack of evidence.

Debasish Gogoi, the victim, and a friend were returning from a day trip to a well-known tourist destination (Gabhoru Parbat) when they were attacked.

They were rushed to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital right away after the attack, where Gogoi passed away from his wounds but his partner Aditya Das lived.

18 people were detained by the police in this case for their alleged involvement, and charges were later filed against them.

“We have been contesting the case in court for more than 2.5 years. Those convicted were in tears after the judge sentenced them to life in prison”, the victim’s father stated.

According to a police official, Assam Police detained three former All Assam Students' Union (AASU) members early on February 28 in relation to a physical assault case in the Baksa district of the state.

Ankur Sharma, Bhavesh Sharma, and Hirakjyoti Sharma were some of the accused that were apprehended by police.

According to the authorities, the group physically abused a teen at the AASU office in Goreswar's Naokata neighbourhood, forcing him or her to take drastic measures like committing suicide.

The suspected leaders fled the scene of the crime for a while after committing it, but they were later apprehended by authorities and imprisoned.

A youngster was physically abused by members in the month of July 2022 at the Naokata AASU Office after they suspected him of stealing. The child killed himself because he was unable to cope with the abuse, the police officer said in a statement to the media about the incident.
