GUWAHATI: In a major success in the ongoing war on drugs, the Assam Police recovered a huge cache of contraband from Rangia in Kamrup (Rural) district on Wednesday.
Based on specific intelligence inputs from Gajraj Intelligencers, a team of Rangia Police launched a search operation in Pub Saban area and recovered 1.3 kilograms of suspected opium. The police also arrested two persons in this connection.
The arrested duo has been identified as Kailash Kalita and Dilawar Hussain. Both are residents of Rangia's Udiyana village.
Moreover, a two-wheeler with registration number AS-01BK-6020 and a four-wheeler with registration number AS-14H-8111 were also seized by the Police following the search operation.
Meanwhile, a case has been registered at the Rangia Police Station and further investigation is in process.
Led by the Officer in Charge of Rangia Police Station, a police team is investigating involvement of anyone else apart from the arrested duo. Further, the police are also looking for other angles of the possibility of involvement of a larger racket in the drug trade.
In another incident on Wednesday, a team from the Panbazar Police Station on apprehended a drug peddler from the Lakhtokia area of the city and recovered 163 grams of heroin filled in 140 small vials. A drug peddler identified as Musaraf Ali alias Takla has been arrested in this connection by police.
It may be recalled here that Guwahati Police seized huge quantity of illegal Yaba tablets earlier on November 5 in the city outskirts. As per the police, the seized tablets are worth over Rs. 15 crores in the market. A total of about 60,000 quantities of Yaba tablets were seized about 20 kilometres away from Guwahati city in Sonapur.
The anti-narcotic operation was led by Joint Commissioner of Guwahati Police Partha Sarathi Mahanta. A four-wheeler was intercepted by the police team at Nazirakhat Toll Gate. On searching the vehicle, it was found that the contraband was concealed in hidden chambers of the vehicle.
Again, in another anti-drug operation, contraband worth Rs. 5 crores were seized from Karimganj district on November 1.
