Assam: 2 Teens Held For Rape Attempt On 11-Year-Old Girl

GUWAHATI: According to police, two teenagers, one of whom is a minor, were detained on Friday in the Sonitpur district of Assam for allegedly attempting to rape an 11-year-old girl.

On her way home from tuition class on Tuesday night, the girl was approached by two class 12 pupils.

"They made an attempt to rape the girl, but they failed. The incident was later reported to a friend, who informed her family, a police officer said.

He claimed that one of the accused was being held from a private Tezpur hostel and the other from his home here.

Police stated that another accused person will appear in court while the minor has been sent to a juvenile facility.

According to the most recent National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) numbers from 2021, Assam has overtaken Punjab as the state with the highest rate of crime against women in India for the fifth consecutive year.

Assam had the highest rate of crime against women in India, at 168.3 instances per one lakh persons, according to NCRB data for 2021. With 147.6, Delhi came in second, followed by Odisha with 137.8.

With a dedicated officer in charge and trained counselors hired by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, with whom the Assam police signed a memorandum of understanding, there are women's support desks in more than 300 police stations, he said.
