MANGALDAI: "Dreams are not what you see in your sleep, dreams are those that don't let you sleep." This famous inspirational quote by Dr APJ Kalam was transformed into reality by a 21-year-old girl, bed-ridden since birth, with an indomitable spirit. Despite her physical disability, she has made it to the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) for her Master's degree in Political Science.

Rup Sikha Nath is the youngest daughter of Kamaleswar Nath and Hemanti Nath - both serving as Sub-Inspectors in the Special Branch of Assam Police- and a resident of Jyoti Nagar here in Mangaldai. Since birth she has been suffering from severe neurological disorder which compelled her to remain bed-ridden. But with her ardent desire to continue her studies and with the help of her parents and eldest sister Parismita, she completed her HSLC examination under SEBA in 2017 with 79.67 per cent, HSSLC under AHSEC in 2019 with 73.86 per cent and BA (with Major in Political Science) from Mangaldai College under Gauhati University this year with 81.50 per cent.

She took admission in Gauhati University to pursue MA in Political Science. But on Wednesday evening she got the news that she has become eligible for admission in JNU. She will leave for New Delhi on November 13. However, she is facing another problem as she needs her mother all the time. Her mother, who is serving as a Sub-Inspector in Assam Police, will require leave for a long period.

Meanwhile, Additional Director General of Police, SB Hiren Chandra Nath has assured to extend all necessary help to Rup Sikha in continuing her higher studies. On being contacted over phone, ADGP Nath informed this to The Sentinel on Friday evening. Rup Sikha has another ambition in life - to get admission in premier academic institutions like Cambridge University and to appear for the UPSC examination.
