GUWAHATI: Following intensified operations by the Lakhimpur police, under the lead of new SP Anand Mishra, those involved in the fake gold racket are lying low and some have decided to hand themselves over to the police.

In the last 48 hours, in a big achievement for the police, 32 persons allegedly involved in Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) and fake gold racket surrendered before the police in Lakhimpur district of Assam.

From among the 32 surrendering before the police was one Ajgar Ali, whose mother had reportedly lodged an FIR against SI Junmoni Rabha, levelling extortion charges against her. Junmoni had died in a mysterious road accident last week under suspect circumstances.

Lakhimpur has been named as one of the four districts that has been identified to be the place where the rackets of fake notes and gold racket are thriving, police sources added.

The surrender has taken place following a warning from Assam DGP GP Singh on Saturday. DGP Singh, while talking about the suspected involvement of FICN and fake gold rackets in Junmoni’s death case, had warned that the illegal trade making headlines would be destroyed within 30 days.

Lakhimpur SP, IPS Anand Mishra, soon after assuming charge, said on Sunday that those involved in fake note and fake gold rackets would not be spared.

Earlier, on May 15, Ajgar’s mother Amina Khatun lodged an FIR, accusing Junmoni of physically assaulting her son, with the North Lakhimpur police. Later, a case was filed against Junmoni under the charges of criminal conspiracy, dacoity, robbery or dacoity with an attempt to cause death or grievous hurt, wrongful restraint and putting person in fear of death or of grievous hurt in order to commit extortion. The charges were based on Amina’s complaint.

DGP GP Singh on Tuesday evening directed the CID to investigate the case of the SI's death and also the case registered against her in Lakhimpur district a day earlier on various charges, including extortion.

Meanwhile, a three-member CID team from Guwahati reached Nagaon on Wednesday, to conduct a probe into Junmoni’s death.

Junmoni was killed on NH37 near Jakhalabandha, about 55km east of Nagaon town, when her car collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction. She was driving her own car and was in civil dress at the time of the accident.
