Assam: 54th Annual Rock Climbing Training Course by AMA Inaugurated in City

The course will be held on every Sunday of December till the end of the month (December 4, 10, 11, 18, 25 are the dates of the course)

GUWAHATI: Novice rock climbers from across the state converged at the State Zoo in the city on Sunday for the inauguration of Annual Basic Rock Climbing Course conducted by Assam Mountaineering Association (AMA).

Assam's premier adventure sports organisation AMA, has been organising this training programme for youth belonging to the age group of 14-45 years since 1968, in order to inculcate in them discipline, obedience, leadership quality, team spirit, love for adventure, love for nature, as well as physical and mental fitness. The AMA organises an annual winter rock climbing camp at the Late Rohini Kumar Bhuyan Memorial Rock Climbing Arena in Guwahati Zoo.

Basic training in mountaineering and rock climbing are imparted in the camp. Like previous years, this year too, training in rock climbing, hiking, rappelling, single rope bridge technique, ladder climbing and crossing, chimney climbing, waterfall climbing, delta crossing, and other aspects of this adventure sports will be taught to novice rock climbers. As part of the training, experience of night camping will be provided to the novice rock climbers as it is an important part of the mountaineering experience.

The 54th annual rock climbing course was officially inaugurated today, the 27th of November. The course will be held on every Sunday of December till the end of the month (December 4, 10, 11, 18, 25 are the dates of the course). More than 70 participants above the age of 14 are taking part in the training. The course was officially flagged off at the premises of the State Zoo in the city on Sunday. In a bid to provide inspiration to the trainees at the inauguration of the course, the state Sports and Youth Welfare joint director Antara Gogoi and assistant director Navadeep Basumatary attended the ceremony as the special guests. General secretary of the Assam Mountaineering Association Manash Baruah informed that the inauguration ceremony was attended by AMA president Dr Devendra Mahanta as the chairperson of the event, Bedabrata Mishra, Senior Journalist, Pulin Saha, Senior Journalist along with Dr. Devendranath Mahanta, President AMA, Biren Das, Senior Mountaineer, Parbati Prasad Gautam. The meeting was presided by Senior Advocate Sri Satyen Sarma at the State Zoo Premises (parking lot).

The training that was flagged off today will conclude on 25th December, 2022.
