GUWAHATI: In connection with the suspected kidnapping and murder of a 32-year-old pharmacy worker from Guwahati's Panjabari neighbourhood four months ago, police have detained six people. Police announced on Monday that after four months of bumbling around in the investigation, they had finally solved it in the last five days.
Ajay Kalilta (30), Debajit Deka (26), Sanjay Kumar Bhagat (26), Paras Chetri (24) and Mayur Nath (24) of Guwahati, and Pranab Ranghang (25) of Karbi Anglong have been named as the arrested individuals. The victim, Biswajit Hazarika, a resident of Guwahati's Rukmininagar, was allegedly abducted by the six on October 9 of last year as he was making his way home from his pharmacy at around 7.30 p.m.
He was transferred to the Jagiroad police station in Morigaon, which oversees Amguri, and imprisoned inside a recently built bathroom in Pranab's home. On October 10, the victim's relatives received a phone call from the kidnappers demanding a ransom of Rs 40 lakh, according to Guwahati police commissioner Diganta Barah.
Videos of Biswajit being tortured were sent to the family via WhatsApp to keep the pressure on them. He continued, "But on October 23, as the police closed in, the kidnappers executed the prisoner to wipe all evidence out of fear of being discovered. At the Gopal Krishna tea estate, Biswajit was strangled, wrapped in a large jute sack, and then dumped into the Killing river, according to the investigation.
