The Indian Constitution regards them as being of a Scheduled Tribe; outside Assam, they are considered to be tribal, but in Assam, they are deprived of the ST status. They said, “The demand for our ST is nothing new; we are already listed in it. It is our long-pending demand that the ST be granted to the Adivasis of Assam. We demand that our status be granted.”
