GUWAHATI: The district unit of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), staged a protest against the price rise in the Jorhat town and demanded the government to give relief to the common people.

Several AASU activists participated in the protest and took out a rally with bullock carts. The protesters also appealed to the voters to think about the price rise before exercising their franchise in the upcoming by-polls of the state.

"We are protesting against the skyrocketing price rise of essential commodities. We also protest against the fuel price hike. We have seen that the per litre petrol price touches Rs. 105. What the government is doing now," an AASU leader who also took part in the protest said.

He added that earlier BJP leaders and workers protested against the price rise when the present Opposition party ruled the country. "I want to ask the leaders and workers who protested against earlier as to why they are maintaining silence now ?" he said.

Meanwhile in Guwahati also AASU protested against the price hike of petrol, diesel, LPG and other essential commodities on Friday.

Earlier, the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) on Monday declared satyagraha against big dams and price hikes of petrol, diesel and essential commodities.

AASU in-charge president Bipul Rabha and general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah announced that the students' body would stage satyagraha in all district headquarters against price hike on October 22 and against the big dam issue on October 25.

Talking to media persons, AASU in-charge president Bipul Rabha and general secretary said, "Since some days, the spiralling price hike of fuel and essential commodities has gone beyond the control of the Central and State governments. All sections of people are suffering because of steep price hike of LPG, petrol, diesel and essential items. The price of petrol is more than Rs 100 per litre. If fuel prices continue to rise, prices of essential commodities will also keep increasing. The AASU will stage satyagraha against the anti-people attitude of the government."
