HATSINGIMARI: A large number of people came out on the street to take part in a protest led by the All Assam Students Union (AASU) in the district headquarters of the South Salmara-Mankachar district of the state. The organisation was protesting against the lack of development of the road in the region.

The All Assam Students Union alleged that the state government and the local authorities have not implemented the necessary steps to repair the 22-kilometre stretch of road connecting Mankachar to the district headquarters of Hatsingimari. As a mark of protest, the organisation blocked the road in front of the District Commissioner’s office in Hatsingimari for several hours.

The protesters carried placards and engaged in sloganeering against the administration. Statements like ‘No road, vo vote’ and ‘We need our road’ were chanted as they halted the vehicles.

It can be noted that the Hatsingimari-Mankachar connecting road has been in a very pitiable condition for a very long time and demands have been raised multiple times regarding its repairs. In the monsoon season, the situation becomes way worse because of water-logging in the potholes on the road and this has become a major concern of the people of the district. The protesters also threatened to carry out massive democratic protests against the administration if steps are not taken towards the immediate renovation of the important road.

Before this, the South Salmara Mankachar district saw a protest on Monday against the steep rise in prices of essential commodities in front of the office of the Hatsingimari district collector. Led by former MLA from Mankachar constituency, Matiur Rahman Mondal, hundreds of Congress workers assembled with placards in hand, voicing their dissent and raising anti-government slogans in opposition to the state government. The protestors expressed their concerns over the escalating prices of essential food items, including medicines, diesel, petrol, gas cylinders, vehicles, rice, flour, onions, lentils and potatoes.
