BISWANATH: The All Assam Students Union (AASU) has taken out a bicycle rally in the Biswanath region of the state in protest of the recent policies of the education department of the state government.
Several organisations including the All Assam Students Union have been protesting against the decision of the education department to publish textbooks for multiple subjects in the English language and impart the knowledge of these subjects in the same language and not in the vernacular languages, not even in Assamese. The students’ body has mentioned that the current government is working against the interests of the Assamese community.
The Biswanath Unit of the organisation undertook this cycle rally at 12 PM on Saturday. President of the Biswanath Unit, Suraj Bhuyan also attended this protest along with several other key office holders of the organisation. More than five hundred students, from different organisations, took part in this protest. The rally started at the Swahid Bhawan and passed through the National Highway number 15 in front of the College and through the town. The participants carried placards and chanted slogans against the education department, education minister and even the chief minister for their actions against the interest of the people. They also demanded the immediate resignation of the education minister if they could not take any steps towards the betterment of the people of the state.
Previously, the members of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Thursday initiated a protest programme in the Lakhimpur district against the State Government’s decision to teach Mathematics and Science in English in vernacular medium schools from Class 6 onwards. In this connection, the Lakhimpur district unit of the organization initiated a three-hour-long sit-in in North Lakhimpur town. Leading the protest programme, Lakhimpur AASU president Simanta Neog and general secretary Swaraj Sankar Gogoi slammed the Government of Assam for taking the decision which is allegedly destructive to the Assamese language and the mother languages of the indigenous communities of Assam. They reiterated that the decision of the government to teach Mathematics and Science in English from Class 6 is detrimental to the growth of Assamese, Bodo and other local languages.
