SILCHAR: Forcible removal of banners and hoardings with Bengali alphabets or words by the cadres of Veer Lachit Sena and AASU from puja pandals in various parts of the State had triggered much protest in Barak Valley. Opposition leaders like Susmita Dev, Kamalakha Dey Purkayastha and Pradip Dutta Roy had condemned the act as ‘illegal’.

Former MP Susmita Dev condemned the incident as she said, pulling down a banner from the puja pandals only because some words were written in Bengali alphabets was an act of utter shamelessness and these radical outfits had crossed the barriers of law.

The Congress MLA from Karimganj Kamalakha Dey Purkayastha termed the act as an insult to Sanatan dharma. Purkayastha, who is also the working president of the State Congress said, the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had left no stone unturned to project himself as the champion of Sanatan dharma, but he preferred to remain silent when outfits like Lachit Sena targets the greatest celebration of Hindus. Purkayastha said he felt sorry for the cadres of AASU and Lachit Sena for their sheer ignorance of the Sanatan culture. “It was indeed a shame for entire Assam as in the rest of the world Durga Puja is being celebrated by the people of all communities with much gaiety, but in our State, organisations like these vandalised the spirit of Durga puja for really a silly reason”, Purkayastha said.

Pradip Dutta Roy, the chief convener of the Barak Democratic Front, on the other hand, said, he was not at all surprised to see the act of forcefully pulling down the banners from puja pandals because AASU and Lachit Sena were champions of these type of radical activists. “ Silence is the fittest protest for these kinds of mindless acts, and we prefer to remain silent. Let the government, the administration and the intellectuals of the Brahmaputra valley come forward to condemn such activities first,” Dutta Roy added.
