DIBRUGARH: In view of skyrocketing prices of essential commodities in the State, the members of the Dibrugarh District unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) staged a massive protest at Marwari Patty in Dibrugarh on Friday. The students’ union demanded a curb in the rising prices of fuel, cylinder, medicines, electricity bill, foodgrains and other essential commodities.

The protesters also burnt the effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and State Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass.

A minor scuffle also broke out between the police and the AASU members when they tried to prevent them from burning the effigies.

AASU leader Abani Gogoi said, “We demand resignation of State Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass as he has totally failed to control price rise. He has proved to be the most incompetent minister of the present government. From fuel, cylinder, medicines, electricity bill, foodgrains to vegetables prices has gone beyond control and out of reach of common people. The government should take strong measures to curb price rise.”

“Due to rising price of essential commodities, the common people are facing difficulties to run their family. The government had assured that they would take necessary action to curb the price rise but they have failed miserably. The Food and Civil Supplies department of Assam has failed completely to check the price rise,” Gogoi added.

TINSUKIA: In response to the call of AASU, the Tinsukia district committee brought out a protest rally against sky rocketing prices of essential commodities including vegetables at Thana Chariali Tinsukia on Friday. The protest was led by Raja Balimora and Samarjyoti Gohain president and general secretary of All Tinsukia District Students’ Union respectively. Later addressing the media, Gohain demanded immediate resignation of Food & Civil Supply Minister if he fails to curb the price rise.
