GUWAHATI: In an effort to address the contentious issue of cattle transportation between Meghalaya and Assam, the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister of Meghalaya, AL Hek, met his Assam counterpart, Atul Bora, for a crucial discussion. The meeting was prompted by the recent apprehension of cattle traders from Meghalaya in Assam while attempting to transport cattle. While Assam has imposed restrictions on the transportation of cattle without proper documentation, Meghalaya has yet to enforce such restrictions.

During the high-level discussion, Minister AL Hek highlighted the need for collaborative efforts in resolving the matter. He emphasized that national highways are accessible to all citizens and argued against the prohibition of cattle transportation on these routes.

Minister Atul Bora assured his Meghalayan counterpart that he would carefully examine the issue and expressed optimism in finding a mutually agreeable solution. The subject of cattle transportation has been a persistent source of tension between the two neighboring states for some time now.

In 2019, Assam enforced restrictions on the transportation of cattle through its borders with Meghalaya, leading to legal challenges from the latter. The matter is currently pending in the courts as both states grapple with finding a balanced resolution that respects their respective concerns. The recent meeting between the two ministers signals a willingness to engage in constructive dialogue and seek an amicable resolution to the long-standing dispute. The cattle trade plays a significant role in the livelihoods of many individuals in both Meghalaya and Assam, making it essential to address the issue with sensitivity and practicality.

As discussions continue, both states strive to find a solution that accommodates the interests of their citizens while upholding regional harmony and cooperation. The outcomes of these deliberations are anticipated with keen interest as Meghalaya and Assam endeavor to navigate the complexities of interstate trade and mutual understanding.
