Assam: Army Neutralises Mortar Recovered in Pengeri

Meanwhile, the authorities have informed that the destroyed mortar was made in the United States.

TINSUKIA: In an effort to prevent any untoward situation arising from a recovered mortar, the Indian Army destroyed a mortar through a controlled explosion.

An 81 MM mortar was recovered from near the Pengeri Tarani Bridge which comes under the jurisdiction of the Pengeri police Station. The mortar was recovered on Tuesday afternoon and is said to belong to the World War II era. It was recovered from the fields of one Arun Moran while he was tilling his land using a tractor.

After the recovery of the mortar, the Indian Army and Pengeri police set up a safe parameter to prevent any person from going near the possible explosive. And on Wednesday a team of experts from the Indian Army arrived at the location on the morning of Wednesday and successfully neutralised the explosive in a controlled way after burring it underground.

Meanwhile, the authorities have informed that the destroyed mortar was made by the United States.

Meanwhile, working based on specific information, Biswanath Police was able to recover a pistol that was being hidden in a banana plantation in the district. Following this development, a case was registered and an investigation was initiated. IBI Biswanath reportedly received inputs of a firearm being hidden in a particular location. Based on this information, an operation was initiated under the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Biswanath, IBI Biswanath and the officer in charge of the Biswanath Police Station. A 0.22 caliber pistol along with its magazine was recovered. A total of five 0.22-inch rounds were also recovered during this operation.

It was informed by the police that the firearm was found concealed under a dry banana tree in a banana garden located inside line number 23 of the Dhuli Tea Estate. Notably, this locality comes under the jurisdiction of the Balichang Police Outpost under the Biswanath Chariali Police Station. An investigation is underway regarding this development with respect to the General Diary Entry number 08 dated 17th October 2023 of the Biswanath Chariali Police Station.
