PATHSALA: The dennartari (charal para) village, in Bajali district wore a festive look ahead of Diwali. The people of the village including students, elderly people are busy from dawn to dusk in giving final touches to the earthen lamps for the festival of lights.

The clay work is a tradition of the locality where 100 families earn their livelihood by selling items like curd pot, flower tub, dhuna pot, including the traditional earthen lamp made from clay.

In particular, the women in their houses craft a mechanism that rotates a ball bearing within a piece of wood with one hand while creating a variety of objects with a magical flick of their fingers with the other.

While one person is busy burning the finished product and some are busy hawking their wares in surrounding markets, others are busy drying the clay lamp in the sun before lighting it.

Each member of the family abides by their custom, and their front door has a supply of the unique clay and burning “bhatti.”

After the raw material has dried in the sun, they burn it with the aid of sawdust gathered from sawmills. These items are supplied to various places of Assam.
