Assam Athletes in Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022

As many as seven players from Assam will participate in the Commonwealth Games 2022 which is all set to kick start on Thursday.

The games will witness participation from 72 countries, featuring more than 4500 players competing with each other for a podium finish.

7 players from Assam such as Lovlina Borgohain, Hima Das, Shiv Thapa, Popi Hazarika, Tania Chowdhury, Nayanmani Saikia, and Mridul Borgohain will also participate in the games.

Lovlina Borgohain

Lovlina Borgohain was born in the Golaghat district of Assam on October 2, 1997. Her father Tiken Borgohain is a small-scale businessman and had financial struggles to support his daughter's ambition while her mother is a housemaker. Following the footsteps of her twin sisters Licha and Lima, she first took up Muay Thai, a form of kickboxing at the age of 13. She later shifted to boxing.

Having found her love in boxing, Lovlina was always on the lookout for an opportunity. And it came within a few months. SAI was holding the trials at Barpathar Girls High School, where she studied, and Lovlina showed her skills when she took part in the trials. That's how Boro noticed her exceptional talent and started honing it in 2012. She was later coached by India's chief women's boxing coach Shiv Singh.

In her journey to reach the pinnacle, she battled society which used to question her interest in Boxing being a female. Speaking about achievements, she won a Bronze medal at the 2018 and 2019 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships where represented India for the first time. In 2018, she won a gold medal at the 1st India Open International Boxing Tournament held in New Delhi. She has also won a Silver medal at the 2nd India Open International Boxing Tournament held in Guwahati.

In 2020, she was awarded the Arjuna Award by President Ram Nath Kovind virtually for her outstanding performance in boxing. After qualifying for Tokyo Olympics 2020, she became the first woman in the history of Assam to qualify for the Olympics.

The government also supported her in different fields like personalized training camp in Guwahati post her recovery from Covid 19, procurement of consumable equipment, medical expenses and doctor consultation while she tested positive for Covid 19, and training camp at Assisi, Italy before Olympics. The government invested around Rs 18,30,515 for Lovlina's training.

Hima Das

Hima Das (born 9 January 2000), nicknamed Dhing Express, is an Indian sprinter from the state of Assam. She holds the current Indian national record in 400 meters with a timing of 50.79 s that she clocked at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.

She is the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in a track event at the IAAF World U20 Championships. She was appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Assam Police under the state's Integrated Sport Policy.

Shiva Thapa

Shiva Thapa (born 8 December 1993) is an Indian boxer. He is employed with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. He is supported by Olympic Gold Quest and Anglian Medal Hunt Company, Shiva Thapa participated in the 2012 London Olympics, and was the youngest Indian boxer to qualify for the Olympics.

Shiva Thapa is ranked 3rd in the bantamweight category in the AIBA Men's World Ranking. He is the third Indian to clinch gold at the Asian Games.

Shiva Thapa is the third Indian boxer to win a medal at the AIBA World Boxing Championships. He is now an Account Manager with Midland Credit management. Thapa has been elected as a member of the International Boxing Association (amateur) Athletes Committee.
