BISWANATH: The Assam Tea Tribes Students Association (ATTSA) staged a protest demanding land rights for the tea tribes community of the state. The student body carried out the protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office of the former district of the state on Monday
The two-hour-long protest was called by the central leadership of the Assam Tea Tribes Students Association. Members of the organisation from the Gohpur, Bihali and Biswanath units took part in this protest. The protesters presented a memorandum to the authorities demanding proper actions in regard to the demands of the people belonging to the tea trib communities.
The protesters mentioned that the tea tribes form an essential part of the greater Assamese community and have been instrumental in developing the economy of the state by contributing towards the tea sector, which is one of the biggest sources of revenue for the state. They also added that even though they had put forward their demands several times in the past, no government had looked into the same in the past. They also pointed out that even though the current government has implemented the Bansundhara Scheme, it has not been successful in the tea garden regions of the state.
Previously, the All Assam Students Union (AASU) has taken out a bicycle rally in the Biswanath region of the state in protest of the recent policies of the education department of the state government. Several organisations including the All Assam Students Union have been protesting against the decision of the education department to publish textbooks for multiple subjects in the English language and impart the knowledge of these subjects in the same language and not in the vernacular languages, not even in Assamese. The students’ body has mentioned that the current government is working against the interests of the Assamese community.
