GUWAHATI: The Assam government in the continuation of its mission to make the state a hothouse of sporting excellence and to harness the treasure trove of local sports talent, is taking another step in that direction by scheduling the launch of the National Center of Excellence of the Badminton Association of India (BAI) in Guwahati on Friday, August 11.

The BAI’s National Center of Excellence is slated to come up at the Amingaon Indoor Stadium. The new Centre for badminton will boast a world-class infrastructure, combined with highly experienced national and international coaches and top-of-its-class support facilities to provide a boost to the state’s shuttlers.

The new state-of-the-art national badminton centre at Amingaon, which is a joint venture being set up by the Assam Government and BAI, is scheduled to be launched on Friday. The much looked forward to event will be held in the presence of the who's who of the state and country's badminton fraternity.

The new centre’s operation and management will be in the hands of the Sports and Youth Welfare Department, Assam, while the technical part will expectedly be handled by the Badminton Association of India.

This ambitious project of BAI will comprise a whopping total of 24 badminton courts, with the centre having a seating capacity of around 5,000 spectators. The Guwahati edition of the BAI Center of Excellence has been touted to be the biggest in the country, with two dozens of courts under a single roof.

To mark the significant occasion, the triumphantly-returned Indian men's badminton team, which bagged the crown in the Thomas Cup in 2022, is set to be felicitated by the BAI president and Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The Centre of Excellence is also entrusted with the responsibility of spotting local, as well as national talent, right up from the grassroots level and prepare them for the future glory of the state and country.

The commitment of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was apparent from the start when, earlier this month, he announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Assam government and the Badminton Association of India for setting up of the National Centre of Excellence for Badminton in the state.

On August 3, CM Sarma had made the announcement on his Twitter handle, stating that the MoU will be valid for 10 years and will subsequently be extended by another 10 years.
