GUWAHATI: In a significant development, the government of Assam has established a new administrative district named 'Bajali,' with its headquarters situated in Madan Rauta Nagar, Pathsala. This decision, which was officially announced on October 2, 2023, during a special cabinet meeting in Guwahati on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, comes into effect from October 12.

The creation of the Bajali district is primarily aimed at enhancing administrative efficiency and serving the public's convenience better. The geographical boundaries of this newly formed district will align precisely with the recently delimited legislative assembly constituency of Bajali. This strategic alignment is expected to facilitate the administration's smooth functioning and deliver public services more effectively.

Governor of Assam's notification emphasizes that a sub-committee of the Assam Cabinet, established by a notification dated September 30, 2023, will soon begin identifying additional geographical areas that may be integrated into the Bajali district. Within 30 days, this committee is expected to submit a report detailing its findings and recommendations. This decision underscores the government's commitment to ensuring that the new district's formation remains a dynamic process, open to potential expansion and enhancement.

According to the statement, the newly defined legislative assembly constituency for Bajali will co-terminus with the district's physical boundaries. The directive further said that additional geographic regions that could be included in the new district would be identified by a Cabinet subcommittee that has already been notified. It further said that the report will be produced in this respect within 30 days.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a press statement following the cabinet meeting, confirmed the creation of the Bajali district, which includes the existing Bajali constituency. However, the inclusion of Bhawanipur and Sorbhog into this district will be subject to further deliberation.

The Assam CM said, "Today we have decided to officially grant district status to Bajali. The move will come into effect from October 12 formally. However, the decisions on including Bhawanipur and Sorbhog into the district will be deliberated on later."

Bajali was among the four districts that were merged with the original districts on December 31, 2022, to facilitate the delimitation process. The other three were Hojai, Biswanath and Tamulpur.

The establishment of the Bajali district represents a proactive approach by the Assam government to streamline administrative functions and provide improved public services to the residents of this region. The decision to create a district underscores the government's commitment to ensuring efficient governance while remaining open to the possibility of expanding its jurisdiction to better meet the needs of the public. This move reflects a broader strategy to enhance the state's governance and administration for the benefit of its citizens.
