Assam: Bikash Baruah Journalist of Tinsukia Press Club assaulted

A journalist of Tinsukia Press Club, Bikash Baruah was allegedly physically assaulted by a group of anti-socials led by a web portal reporter at Thana Chariali in the heart of Tinsukia town on Tuesday evening. Condemnation poured in from various journalistic bodies.

TINSUKIA: A journalist of Tinsukia Press Club, Bikash Baruah was allegedly physically assaulted by a group of anti-socials led by a web portal reporter at Thana Chariali in the heart of Tinsukia town on Tuesday evening. Condemnation poured in from various journalistic bodies.

According to reports, a Tinsukia-based web portal reporter, who is a repeated offender and presently on bail, seeing Bikash Baruah nearby, allegedly started abusing him and hurled objectionable remarks on journalists. When Baruah protested, all the goons accompanying the accused and the accused himself started assaulting Baruah in full public view. Baruah immediately lodged an FIR against the accused at Tinsukia Sadar PS. The police picked up the main accused Santosh Phukan on Tuesday night while the others are absconding.

Meanwhile, a delegation from Tinsukia Press Club led by Kamal Talukdar, president, and Chinmoy Sarma, secretary, along with members from other journalist unions met the OC Tinsukia Sadar PS on Wednesday and demanded arrest of all the culprits to ensure security and safety of journalists. The Tinsukia District Journalists’ Association along with other press clubs also condemned the incident and demanded stringent punishment to the culprits.
