Guwahati: Assam BJP has announced Bhuban Gam as its candidate for the upcoming Majuli by-polls which will be held on March 7.
The Majuli seat has remained vacant since last year as former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was elected to the Rajya Sabha and later inducted in the Union Cabinet.
A few days back, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met Sonowal in New Delhi to finalise their party candidate for Majuli bypoll.
Interestingly, Congress has left the Majuli seat for Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) to contest. However, AJP is yet to name any candidate for the seat.
The bypoll to fill the Majuli seat will be held on March 7, 2022 and the counting of votes will take place on March 10 along with counting for Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Punjab and Manipur assembly elections.
As per the schedule announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the notification in this regard will be issued on February 10.
Notably, the Majuli got the status of district when Sonowal was the Chief Minister of Assam.
