GUWAHATI : Adding to the list of contraband seizure cases in Assam, police has encountered one more case in Assam's Karimganj district. Police in Bazaricherra, grasped a luxury night bus carrying Burmese cigarettes, biscuits and other illicit items.
The incident took place on Sunday night and the stuff was reportedly being transferred to Ladrymbai in Meghalaya. The officer in charge of Bazaricherra police station, Chiranjit Kumar Bora stated that they intercepted the vehicle and the items during a routine check in that area.
The bus was stopped at a checkpoint approximately 102 km away from Silchar town, and it was headed towards Guwahati, added the OC. The police has seized 240 packets of Burmese cigarettes, 18 packets of Burmese biscuit, 208 packs of Mikko powder and 120 bottles of soft drinks.
As per sources, the market value of these items is estimated to be around 2 lakh. The seized items were submitted in the Bazaricherra police station for further investigation on the matter. According to the police officials, an unidentified man had stuffed the illegal items in the bus and informed the driver that a person would collect it from Ladrymbai.
However, the man did not give any sort of receipt to the driver. The man loaded the items in Putiyakhal village, in Ichabeel Tea Estate. A thorough investigation has been launched by the police to bring to book the culprits behind the case.
As the complaints against Burmese cigarettes and other imported stuff in Karimganj is considered a never ending scenario, some people claim that there exist a racket behind this, and a section of police and political leaders are involved in it. However, there is no proof regarding this claim.
These people have requested CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to look into the matter and order a thorough and in-depth investigation.
